1. Learn all about the Rio Olympics, the mascots Vinicius and Tom at the official website of the Rio2016 games (https://www.rio2016.com/mascots/#!olympic-mascot). This page has a host of activities for kids. Learn about the mascots, read and hear their stories, take cool selfies with them, download masks, colouring pages, make paper toys and find out which sport will suit you by taking a quick quiz.
2. Create some Olympic art- Get your kids to draw and paint the Olympic rings on a white chart paper. This is a great time to teach them the significance of the five interlocking rings coloured blue, black, red, yellow and green. These rings represent 5 world continents: Africa, Asia, America, Europe and Oceania and was designed in 1912 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, co-founder of the modern Olympic Games.
3. Host a mini Olympic games in your backyard or nearby park- Simulate track and field events, long jump, shot put (use household objects or toys to throw and measure distance), javelin throw (use an old broom or wiper or stick) or discus throw (using Frisbees). Print medals and give to the winners.
4. Learn the flags- The games are a wonderful opportunity to teach your kids about the flags of the participating countries. Teach your kids to recognise flags around the world, by taking the top 15 countries from last times medal tally. You can create a flash card game by pasting the flags along with their names beneath or just the flags and the names separate and printing so your kids can match the flag and the country.
5. Olympic vocabulary- Enhance your child’s vocabulary by printing small pocket sized cards with common words related to the games like: rings, torch, flame, medals, podium, mascot, flag and of course the names of the various sports.
